Once you secure a US visa appointment, you must take certain documents with you to your US visa interview. Failure to do so will result in your US visa being denied.
US Visa Application Letter
You must present the visa appointment letter from the U.S. Consulate where your visa interview will take place. This specifies the time and date of your interview
Supporting Documents
You must take the following supporting documents with you:
- The page of your DS-160 which contains your signature and the unique barcode. Immigroup can help you with your DS-160 application form or you can fill it out online.
- Your passport, which must have at least 6 months validity on it.
- 2 inch x 2 inch passport photo
- Payment slips from Scotia Bank to prove you paid your visa fees
- Original documents showing immigration status in Canada (e.g. your PR card)
- Self - addressed envelope
- Original US immigration documents if you were previously in the United States
- Translations of all non-English documents
- Details of criminal records, waivers and pardons if applicable
Applicants for student visas, temporary visas or company transfers must also provide additional documentation, which will be listed on the visa application letter.
Documents Showing Ties to Canada
When you attend the interview, the U.S. Consular official will also want to see proof of your ties to Canada. The following documents will help to prove ties:
- A letter from your employer. The letter should be on company letterhead. The letter should state the employer's full name and be signed by him or her. The contents of the letter should state your full name, your position or job title, the date you commenced employment, and your current salary. If the purpose of the trip to the U.S. is in connection with your place of work, the letter should mention the trip details and also that your company (in Canada) will cover all expenses for the trip. The letter should finally state the contact details of the employer in case the Visa Officer needs to contact him or her.
- Your ORIGINAL Permanent Resident card or your Record of Landing if you still have this document in your possession
- Utility bills, cable bills, internet bills for the last 3 months that show your name and address
- A property deed or lease/rental agreement showing your place of residence in Canada
- An insurance policy showing that you are the policy holder OR the beneficiary (if you have insurance)
- Any original identity documents in your name (i.e. Original Driver's Licence, Original Health Card, etc.)
- Your automobile insurance (if you drive)
- A "Statement of Account"(s) from your bank
- A credit card or debit card (showing your name)
- If you are flying to the U.S., your flight tickets
US Passport Photos
You need to provide 2 passport-sized photographs, measuring 2 inches by 2 inches. The background must be white in color. The EXACT photo specifications are listed in the appointment letter package. Please show the photo specifications to your photographer.
Consulate Government Fee
Before you attend the visa appointment at the U.S. Consulate, you must pay a government fee in US funds in order for them to process your visa application. Payment must be made through Scotia Bank using Scotia Bank deposit slips. Once payment is made, the bank teller will stamp all three copies and return two slips which you must take to the U.S. Embassy. When you go to the embassy, you will need to present the stamped deposit slip to the Consular official.
The fees vary according to the visa you are applying for:
- B, F, J and M visas USD $140
- H, L, O, P, Q, R visas USD $150

Methods of Receiving Your Passport and Visa after Your Appointment
In cases where you elect to have your passport mailed by Canada Post Express Regional Mail Delivery, applicants must go to the local Canada Post office and purchase an pre-paid Express Post Regional self-addressed envelope before they go to the Consulate. These are NOT available at the Consulate. The approximate cost is CDN $9.
Consulate Restrictions
Finally, you are prohibited from bringing food or beverage, backpacks, luggage or purses, cell phones, PDAs, or ANY electronic equipment. Your confirmation letter lists all prohibited items.
